How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Rotating tires

Tire rotation is an essential part of vehicle maintenance, as it makes sure your tires remain in top condition on the Frazee roads. But you might be wondering how many miles should you drive to rotate your tires? Experts like those in our service center generally agree that you should rotate your tires every 5,000 to 8,000miles, although your owner’s manual will give you a more specific figure for your make and model. While tire rotation is a straightforward process, it’s still important that you follow the steps exactly, so the service team at Norseman Motors, Inc. has put together a guide outlining what to do. If you’d rather let our expert team take care of it for you, then contact us or schedule an appointment today online.

Why Rotate Tires?

Knowing when to rotate your tires is an easy and important way to extend the life of your tires, so you don’t have to replace them as frequently while also giving you a good idea of how many miles you should wait to rotate them. It also keeps you safer on the roads, especially if you live in an area with frequent hazardous weather or road conditions. Here are some other benefits of regular tire rotation:

  • Improved traction on slippery roads
  • Less noise on the road
  • Relieves unnecessary stress on the drivetrain

Rotating Tires on 2WD Vehicles

Knowing when to rotate your tires is important. The process of rotating your tires is a bit different depending on whether you drive a two-wheel drive (2WD) or an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle. 2WD vehicles are divided into front-wheel drive (FWD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD). If you drive a FWD vehicle, then the engine power is sent to the front tires, meaning they’ll wear out faster. Likewise, a RWD vehicle gets its power sent to the rear tires. Whether you drive a FWD or RWD vehicle, the tire rotation process is the same:

  • For FWD tires: Be sure to flip sides when you move the rear tires. The rear right tire will go on the front left side while the rear left tire will go on the front right side. However, the front tires will retain their same side when you move them to the rear (front left → rear left, front right → rear right).
  • For RWD tires: Invert the above process. The front tires will flip sides when you move them to the rear, but the rear tires will retain the same side when you move them to the front. So: front left → rear right, front right → rear left, rear left → front left, rear right → front right.
  • Your driving habits and conditions will affect your tires’ wear and tire, which in turn will affect how often you should rotate your tires. One of our service experts can examine your car and give you a better idea of when you should perform a tire rotation.

Rotating Tires on AWD Vehicles

Rotating tires on an AWD vehicle requires a different process since engine power is sent to all four wheels and as a result, affects how many miles you should wait to rotate your tires. You’ll want to rotate AWD tires more frequently than 2WD tires. AWD tires generally need to be rotated every 3,000 to 5,000 milesif you use AWD frequently around Perham and beyond. For tire rotation on AWD vehicles, flip each tire you rotate to the opposite side. In other words:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.
