Seeking more time to spend with his family, George Sauvageau founded Norseman Motors, Inc. in 1971. George was a district manager for the Chrysler Corporation and was searching for a way to spend less time on the road. His search ended in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, a beautiful four-seasons resort and recreation area located in west-central Minnesota. The dealership moved to its present location on Highway 10 East in 1974.
Originally a Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge franchise, the dealership was located in a building that now houses a dry cleaning. In 1981, Sauvageau dropped the Chrysler lines and became affiliated with Buick, Pontiac and GMC. The dealership moved to its' present location, on Highway 10 East, in 1974. The new Norseman Motors building was originally a warehouse, and has been transformed to meet the needs of a growing dealership throughout the years.
Today the dealership remains in the Sauvageau family, with George's sons Dan and John serving in key roles at Norseman Motors. Dan Sauvageau began employment with Norseman Motors in 1981 as its' business manager. After stints as sales manager and general manager, he now serves as the President of the company. John Sauvageau worked for the company as a service writer in 1984, and later moved into his present position of General Sales Manager.
Employees of Norseman Motors are active in the community, involved in service clubs such as Rotary and Kiwanis, volunteer fire department and rescue units, youth organizations, public school committees, and more.
